The Questionning Mind
Thursday 14-16, Room LS C9

The project: "Young Adults in the Church" is a co-operation project of the Church Council and Church Resources Agency Sanna-Maaria Tornivaara, Soc.S.M/Communication, is working for the same project as a project coordinator in the Church Resources Agency.
About Workshop: Today's urban lifestyle emphasizes tolerance, freedom and individuality. This is especially true of young adults. Unlike earlier generations, they are not prepared to construct their identities on traditions. They have a questioning mind-set. Values and beliefs are also called into question. The authority of traditional religious institutions and the values they represent are no longer to be taken for granted." (The Questioning Mind: Faith and Values of the New Generation. Church Research Institute.) Finland has been a Christian country where about 82 % of the people still belong to the Lutheran Church. The situation is rapidly changing and especially urban young adults are leaving the church. In Helsinki, only about 67 % of the people belong to the church. This visible change expresses the change of attitudes: traditional religion is giving way to individual spirituality. How do we find urban faith that is genuinely relevant to young adults in our present situation? In this workshop we will ponder this question and present the efforts of the Finnish Church and Parishes to stregthen the connection with young adults.

The Riches of Secularity
Thursday 14-16, Room LS C7
About Leaders: Hans van Drongelen, Ton Meijknecht and Renske Oldenboom work for MoTiv (http://www.motiv.tudelft.nl) at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. MoTiv is the interface between technology and spirituality, founded and funded by churches and sponsored by Delft University, non-profit organizations and companies. They offer a wide variety of programs to reveal the spirituality of the engineer, student and professional.
About Workshop: Are you afraid of the Secular Age? Are you disappointed that secularized people today seem to be so materialistic and disengaged? Don't. Secularity has so much to offer. We would like to show you that the flames of faith and hope are burning in the hearts of engineering students and professionals, that we from MoTiv are working with.
Like so many professionals, engineers are citizens in two worlds at the same time, the exclusively humanist world of modernity and the persistent world of dreams and desires. The last part however, seems to be hidden and unattainable for them. They don't recognize their deepest dreams and drives.
We learned to reveal the duality of their self and to restore their spiritual language of compassion for human needs. In the framework of Charles Taylor's A Secular Age we will introduce our approach to the concealed riches of secularity.
